Fooq’s Miami

Fooq's MiamiIt’s been exactly a year since I left to study abroad in Florence, Italy. Reminiscing on the four incredible months I had there, I couldn’t help but miss all the restaurants that tasted like a first-class destination, but made me feel completely at home. So, to recreate the feeling, I made my way over to Fooq’s Miami. This restaurant aims to serve “Feel Good Food” in an urban, yet distinctly cozy setting.

Restaurant owner, David Foulquier, named the resturant Fooq’s because it ” is inspired by the nickname given to Foulquier’s family home growing up, known amongst friends as a staple meeting place with an open-door policy,” per a release. As for the food, it’s “farm-to-table, international feel-good cuisine” with an “eclectically-curated menu of homemade dishes.”

Talk about #HairGoals

IGK SALON SLSIf you’re like me, you’ve been lusting over all those beachy, bedhead-looking haircuts that have been all over Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook these days. After endless tries to duplicate these hair goals I see all over the internet, I decided to treat my hair to a day of luxury at an Instagram-famous salon.

I’ve been following an Instagram account for the past year who is actually a girl I knew growing up. Little did I know that @thefashionisa wouldn’t just be a friend I had 100 mutual friends with, and someone I knew that decided to go to beauty school; but an actual hair goddess that I am forever grateful for (even if I just started going to her in November).

When I finally realized how much I needed to get my hair back to looking more natural and Pinterest perfect, I called Isa at IGK Salon at SLS and made my first appointment.

My Most Favorite Food…And Story!

MY MOST FAVORITE FOOD NYCDuring my annual girls trip in NYC this weekend, I had the most inspirational lunch at #MyMostFavoriteFood where Doris Schechter shares her family’s amazing journey that spans four generations, three countries, and countless shared meal recipes!

This kosher restaurant, in the upper west side of the city, is a warm account of one family’s journey to America and how food kept them close long after their arrival. I have the pleasure of knowing the family personally. One of my best friends from the University of Miami, and my little sister in my sorority, is Doris’ granddaughter, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be able to share and experience time with this inspiring family. Plus- I got to meet Doris’ biggest role model and friend, Ruth Gruber.
MY MOST FAVORITE FOOD NYC

Adidas Game Day Fashion

Adidas UM FashionSo Adidas decided to hit Nike where it hurts — at least sentimentally. The University of Miami was the original Nike school. Back in 1987 they signed a deal with Nike to exclusively supply uniforms for all of its teams. That’s common practice now, but at the time it was unheard of. Apparently, however, Nike didn’t want to keep shelling out the big bucks and Adidas swooped in. It offered Miami a 12-year-deal (the longest deal Adidas has with any school), rumored to be worth as much as $90 million. And the University of Miami students could not be happier! We now have an endless amount of game day options! My personal favorite? This Miami Hurricanes Jersey Dress!

Calle Ocho: Ventana to Cuba

Growing up Cuban in Miami was kind of like growing up Cuban in Cuba — if you were raised in the 1950s. Fidel may have taken their properties, their businesses, and their country, but he would never take away my family’s way of life!

Because growing up Cuban in Miami was probably way better than growing up Cuban in Castro’s Cuba, we Cubans have to hold our culture high.

It’s not Havana, Cuba. But it’s close. Maybe that’s why they call it “Little Havana”. Only 90 miles, a 48 minute flight separates the two Havanas. One is located on the island of Cuba, the other is here in Miami.

Right in the heart of Miami is an area that is from a Cuban storybook. Here in “Little Havana”, you can find hand-rolled cigars, fruiterias, meat markets, herbal stores and windows with cafecitos for only 25 cents. On 8th Street (or Calle Ocho) between 12th and 27th Avenues lies a time warp into another reality…
